HEBREWS 10:8-10 “THE ONLY TRUE SACRIFICE.” The only effective sacrifice is the sacrifice of Jesus. To make his point and to explain what is in his mind, the author of Hebrews takes a quotation from
Psalm 40:6-9 RSV: “Sacrifice and offering thou dost not desire; but thou hastgiven me anopen ear. Burnt-offering thou hast not required. Then I said: Lo, I come; in the roll of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God.”
The writer has taken the words of the Psalm and put them into the mouth of Jesus. What they say is that God does not want sacrifices; He wants obedience to His will. The writer is not saying anything new when he said that obedience was the only true sacrifice.
Long before him the prophets had seen how sacrifice had degenerated and had told the people that what God wanted was not the blood and flesh of animals but He wanted the obedience of a person’s life. 1 Samuel 15:22 “And Samuel said, has the Lord great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice and to hearken than the fat of rams.” Nothing but obedience could open the way to God; disobedience set up a barrier that no animal sacrifice could take away. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice because He perfectly did God’s will. He brought to God for mankind what no person had been able to bring—perfect obedience that was the perfect sacrifice. These words highlight the voluntary, sacrificial nature of His death and underscore its superiority and permanence. He offered one sacrifice, and its consequences are permanent.
PRAYER – My dear Father, thank You for sending Your one and only Son to be the permanent sacrifice for all of mankind’s sin. Your love for Your creation is beyond my understanding. I know that only You could love that way. There is nothing mankind could do except to accept that demonstration of Your love and walk in obedience to Your word. You are amazing! Amen!
